Is Teen Patti Master Legal in India? The 2025 Online Gaming Act Explained

For years the answer was "it depends on your state". In August 2025 that changed: India passed a central law that bans online money games across the country. Here is what the law says, what it means if you play Teen Patti Master, and which ways of enjoying Teen Patti are still clearly fine. This is a plain-language explainer, not legal advice.

Is Teen Patti Master legal in India — the 2025 Online Gaming Act explained

The short answer

Playing Teen Patti for real money online falls under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, which bans online money games in India — whether they are based on skill, chance or both — and also bans advertising them and processing payments for them. Teen Patti with free chips, offline or socially, with no money at stake, is outside that ban.

What the 2025 law says

The Act was passed by Parliament in August 2025 and received presidential assent on 22 August 2025. According to official summaries, it does four main things:

  • Bans online money games. Any online game where you pay or deposit money expecting to win money is covered, regardless of whether it is called a game of skill or chance.
  • Bans advertising them. Promoting online money games, directly or indirectly, is prohibited.
  • Cuts off payments. Banks and payment providers may not process transactions for online money games.
  • Supports other games. E-sports and online social games — games played without money stakes — are recognised and promoted, with a national authority to oversee the sector.

The law also applies to services operated from outside India if they are offered to people in India. Draft rules under the Act were published in October 2025; details of the final rules and any court challenges may have changed since, so check the latest position.

What it means if you play Teen Patti Master

Summaries of the Act describe its penalties as aimed at those who offer, advertise or process payments for online money games, and describe players more as people the law is meant to protect. But the practical risks for a player are real:

  • Money can get stuck. If an app shuts down or its payment partners stop working with it, wallet balances can become impossible to withdraw.
  • More scams. When legitimate options disappear, fake apps, "agents" and withdrawal-fee scams multiply. Our safe or fake checklist explains the warning signs.
  • No easy complaint route. A banned service gives you little protection if something goes wrong.

If you already have money in an app, the safest move is to withdraw it and keep balances small. Our withdrawal guide covers the steps and common problems.

What was the position before 2025?

Before the central law, legality depended on state laws and on the idea that games of "skill" were treated differently from games of "chance". Several states, such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Assam, Odisha, Sikkim and Nagaland, already had their own restrictions on real-money gaming. That is why you'll still find older articles saying "Teen Patti is legal except in some states" — they describe the situation before August 2025.

Frequently asked questions

Is Teen Patti Master legal in India?

Since the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 came into force, online money games — including Teen Patti played for real money — are banned in India, along with their advertising and the payments that fund them. Free or social Teen Patti, where no money is staked, is not covered by that ban.

Will I be punished for playing Teen Patti Master for money?

Summaries of the Act describe its penalties as aimed at those who offer, advertise or process payments for online money games, rather than at players. But the law, its rules and how they are enforced can change, so this isn't legal advice — check the current position or ask a lawyer.

Is Teen Patti itself illegal?

No. Teen Patti is a traditional card game. The 2025 Act targets online games where users stake money expecting to win money. Playing with free chips, offline, or socially without money is a different thing.

What happens to money already in a Teen Patti app wallet?

If an app stops operating or its payment partners stop processing transactions, money in its wallet can become hard or impossible to withdraw. That is one of the biggest practical risks today — keep balances small and withdraw early.

Is it legal to play Teen Patti offline or on free-chip tables?

Games without real-money stakes fall outside the money-game ban. Offline practice modes and free-chip tables are the safest way to enjoy the game.
